Sowore Criticizes Buhari on His 82nd Birthday, Ignites Social Media Debate
Omoyele Sowore, Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, took a bold swipe at former President Muhammadu Buhari on his 82nd birthday, accusing him of leaving a legacy of destruction in Nigeria.
Sowore’s criticism, shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, December 17, included sharp words: “A man that destroyed his country does not deserve any honor, accolades, or happiness.” He further labeled Buhari with the Hausa phrases “Baba Munafikin Banza, Baba Barawo Banza,” meaning “Liar, thief!”
The post sparked heated reactions on social media, with Nigerians offering a mix of agreement, outrage, and reflection.
Supporters of Sowore echoed his sentiments. One user, @AOchiawuto, condemned Buhari’s defenders, saying, “Those celebrating this criminal are beneficiaries of his criminality, which made all of them criminals.” Another supporter, @_oroshiakose, praised Sowore’s candidness, calling his bold critique “an inspiration.”
Not everyone agreed with Sowore’s approach, however. Critics accused him of hypocrisy and questioned his motives. User @geoffreydpr remarked, “The man you brought into power, with hope that he work hand in hand with you, now see him as a destroyer.”
The polarized reactions underscore the ongoing debate about Buhari’s leadership and its impact on Nigeria. While some Nigerians view his administration as one of missed opportunities and economic hardships, others commend his efforts in areas like infrastructure and security.
Sowore’s comments have reignited this debate, keeping Buhari’s legacy in sharp focus even as the former president marks another year.
