Chaos and Tragedy: Stampedes at Rice Distributions Leave 27 Dead in Anambra and Abuja
A devastating stampede during rice distribution events claimed 17 lives in Anambra State and 10 in Abuja, leaving communities reeling in shock and grief.
In Anambra’s Ihiala Local Government Area, chaos erupted at an annual Christmas rice distribution by the Obijackson Foundation in Okija. The victims, predominantly women and youths, had gathered as early as 5 a.m., hoping to receive the much-anticipated palliatives. However, the overwhelming crowd became unmanageable, leading to a deadly stampede.
Eyewitness accounts revealed harrowing scenes, with bodies, including those of pregnant women, transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. A viral video captured the tragedy, showing frantic efforts to save unconscious victims amidst the chaos.
In Abuja, another stampede during the distribution of palliatives resulted in 10 fatalities, seven of whom were reportedly children. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for better crowd management during humanitarian distributions.
These twin tragedies highlight the urgent need for reforms to prevent such avoidable loss of life in future aid efforts.
