Sabalenka Named WTA Player of the Year
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has been named the WTA Player of the Year for 2024 after capturing four titles during the season.
The Belarusian retained her Australian Open crown in January and added a third Grand Slam singles title with her US Open victory in September. She also claimed wins at the Cincinnati Open in August and the Wuhan Open in October, becoming the first woman to win the Wuhan event three times.
Sabalenka ascended to the top of the rankings in October, ending Iga Swiatek’s 11-month reign. This achievement came despite her absence from Wimbledon due to injury and her decision to skip the Olympics in August to focus on her health.
The 26-year-old concluded the year with an impressive 56-14 win-loss record. This marks the first time Sabalenka has received the Player of the Year honor, succeeding Swiatek, who won the award in 2022 and 2023.
The award winners are selected through votes cast by international tennis media.
