During the New Year Mass in Imo, a Catholic priest fatally shoots a child over fireworks

It is alleged that a Catholic Reverend Father fatally shot a boy after he set off firework display during the New Year Mass in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, on January 1, 2025.

The priest, whose identity is unknown, shot and killed the boy in the church premises, according to a Facebook post published on Wednesday by the ‘For The Love Of Anambra’ page.

It was observed that the incident caused significant shock effects throughout the community.

The post partially states, “The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, with residents expressing outrage and demanding a thorough investigation to uncover the facts behind the unfortunate event.”

There have been numerous responses to the tragic event on social media.

Buka Tee, a Facebook user, responded to the incident by requesting that a thorough and appropriate investigation be conducted into the matter. It is imperative that this matter not disregarded. It is extremely and profoundly disheartening…

Malachy Chukwunyereugo, an additional user, expressed his belief that “He will spend the remainder of his life in prison.”

Icha Joseph stated, “The Rev father acted in self-defense; rev fathers are murdered on a daily basis in the east; therefore, they cannot be overly cautious. Additionally, the Nigerian police prohibit the barbaric act of knockouts, particularly during these periods of widespread insecurity.”

Steve Idealmann, a user, stated, “The father should not be judged in light of the events that transpired in my church yesterday. The congregation is becoming increasingly agitated as the day progresses. How is it possible to direct fireworks at worshippers during the service, rather than at the sky, as they were intended?”

“Everyone needs to talk to his children/wards, it’s becoming unbearable.”

Another Facebook user, Elochukwu Obiegbu said, “Who gave the Rev father a gun or who licenced a gun to him, that is the first question to be directed to the priest.”
