Peter Obi responds to jail rumors while at home in Onitsha
Since the beginning of the year, Obi has dominated headlines due to his heated exchange with the ruling party over his New Year’s Day program.
According to Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, the reports that he has been detained are nothing more than “recurring fake news.”
The former governor of Anambra State, Obi, announced this on Wednesday, December 8, 2024, through a post on his verified X account.
His statement follows whispers that the leader of the Labour Party has been taken into custody in Abuja, the capital of the country, which have been circulating on social media.
He is presently in his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State, but he has denied the allegations and stated they are totally unfounded.
Last September, while Obi was in Rwanda, rumors started circulating that the Department of Security Services (DSS) had broken into his residence.
The former presidential candidate cautioned Nigerians not to let the rumors divert their attention from the pressing issues confronting the country, while admitting that the rumor mongers’ motivations cannot be benign.
“The persistent false news about me. Some false information regarding my claimed arrest has made its way into the media. I want to make it clear that these charges are totally unfounded. At this very moment, I am sitting in my Onitsha, Anambra State, house.
For some, spreading false information about me has become a hobby. You may remember that in September of last year, while I was in Rwanda, rumors circulated that the DSS had broken into my home; today, while I was in my residence in Onitsha, Anambra State, they claimed that I had been arrested in Abuja.
The goal of these peddlers is obviously negative, but we must not let false accusations divert our attention from the grave problems our country is facing. In his letter, he expressed his gratitude to the people of Nigeria for their care, support, and commitment to building a better country.
There have been continuing verbal confrontations between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the previous governor of Anambra, and this new event is adding fuel to the fire.
After criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration in his New Year greeting on Tuesday, December 7, 2024, Obi said that he had been threatened with death.
His claim comes in response to something that Felix Morka, the APC’s national publicity secretary, supposedly said in an interview not long ago.
“Whatever Peter Obi gets, it’s because he has crossed the line so many times,” Morka allegedly remarked.
Having said that, the APC spokesman has refuted claims that he threatened the opposition leader‘s family.
Concurrently, Moka claims that he was the target of more than 200 death threats in response to Obi’s remarks.
On Wednesday, when appearing on Arise Television, the APC chairman revealed that out of 400 threats, fifty percent directly threatened his life.
A chain reaction has begun with Peter Obi’s claims that I threatened his life with my remarks in that interview.
Of the 400 threats I have recorded, approximately 200 are direct calls to death. The threats that I am about to deliver to the authorities are in writing, Morka declared.
