An arrest warrant has been issued by a court in South Korea for the impeached president, Yoon

On Tuesday, investigators announced that a South Korean court had issued an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached and suspended over his unsuccessful attempt to implement martial law.

On December 3, Yoon momentarily suspended civilian rule, resulting in the most severe political crisis in decades in South Korea.

Parliament deprived him of his presidential responsibilities in response to the incident; however, a constitutional court decision regarding the impeachment is still pending.

The Joint Investigation Headquarters issued a statement stating that the arrest warrant and search warrant were issued this morning.

The conservative leader is currently facing criminal allegations of insurrection, which could lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The warrant was requested by investigators who were investigating Yoon regarding his declaration of martial law on Monday after he failed to appear for interrogation for the third time.

A Corruption Investigation Office official informed reporters on Tuesday that there is an apprehension that the individual may refuse to comply with summons without justifiable reasons.

The official stated that there was “sufficient probable cause” to suspect the commission of a crime, and the warrant is valid until January 6. Yoon is expected to be detained at the Seoul detention center.

The warrant was deemed “illegal and invalid” by Yoon’s attorney, who argued that investigators were not authorized to investigate the president.

According to a statement delivered to AFP by attorney Yoon Kab-keun, the arrest warrant and search and seizure warrant that were issued at the behest of an agency without investigative authority are invalid and illegal.

He stated that his client was not guilty of insurrection and that there was no intention to disrupt “the constitutional order” or to conduct “an uprising.”
