EFCC Summons Suspended Edo LGA Chairmen for Financial Misconduct Probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned the suspended chairmen of all 18 local government areas (LGAs) in Edo State for a financial interrogation.

In a letter signed by the EFCC Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol, and addressed to the Secretary to the State Government, the commission directed the chairmen to appear with detailed financial records. These include certified true copies of payroll documents, staff strength reports, and statements for accounts used for salary payments and reserves.

The investigation comes after the Edo State House of Assembly suspended the chairmen and their deputies on December 17, citing alleged insubordination and misconduct. The suspension followed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive for financial statements, which the chairmen reportedly failed to provide.

The summoned chairmen are divided into two reporting dates. Those from Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, Esan West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West are to appear on December 19, while the remaining chairmen will report on December 20.

This move is grounded in Section 38(1) and (2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, granting the commission the authority to request such financial records.

The EFCC’s actions aim to shed light on allegations of financial mismanagement and ensure accountability at the local government level, further intensifying scrutiny of public office holders in the state.
