New China virus: Nigerian government provides updated information on HMPV
The National Center for Health Statistics stressed that people should stay vigilant to protect public health, even though there isn’t any urgent reason to be worried.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that is causing alarm around the world. However, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reassured Nigerians that their country is not in immediate danger from this virus.
“At this time, there is no significant danger,” stated Dr. Jide Idris, director general of the NCDC, in an interview shown on Sunrise Daily, carried out by Channels Television.
Historically, this HMPV virus has been around. Over the years, it has been linked to respiratory infections, particularly in younger and older people.
According to the head of the NCDC, HMPV is “just one of those causes of respiratory problems,” drawing parallels to the flu and other respiratory viruses.
There have been no confirmed instances of HMPV in Nigeria as of yet, according to Dr. Idris, who stated that the country is still in a state of monitoring and alert.
“We report any issues that might pose global risks in accordance with instructions from the WHO,” he stated.
Drawing on the country’s experience with the Ebola and COVID-19 pandemics, he praised Nigeria for its readiness.
The ability to tackle future health concerns was established via those experiences, he said.
Dr. Idris urged the people of Nigeria to take part in preventative measures by washing their hands frequently and staying away from crowded places.
“These are fundamental measures that can assist in decreasing the likelihood of respiratory infections,” he emphasized.
