Nigeria has achieved substantial progress in the fight against kidnapping, with an 80% success rate, according to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu.

Housed at the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the NSA, the MAAKFC initiative is supported by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and focuses on collaborative efforts to tackle kidnapping.

Significant Progress and Commitment

Ribadu highlighted the dedication of security personnel, stating:

“In less than two years, we have achieved nearly 80% success in addressing the menace of kidnapping. This progress is due to the sacrifice and commitment of Nigerians working tirelessly for the safety of all.”

He praised the initiative as a groundbreaking step in enhancing the country’s security, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, innovation, and international partnerships.

Enhanced Capacity and Global Support

The establishment of the MAAKFC follows the 2022 Security Defence Partnership Dialogue between Nigeria and the UK. Since then, the UK has provided training, operational support, and capacity-building exercises to bolster the fusion cell’s efficiency.

Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, described the cell as a 24/7 coordination hub, facilitating seamless collaboration among law enforcement agencies without duplicating efforts.

He added that the center operates under clear guidelines established through a Terms of Reference and Standard Operation Procedure.

Public Cooperation and Awareness

Laka urged Nigerians to trust security agencies instead of resorting to ransom payments, stressing that the MAAKFC initiative will significantly improve security by 2025.

Chris Grimson, NCA Operational Manager, underscored the importance of public awareness in combating kidnapping, while NCA Regional Manager Chris Hall warned kidnappers:

“Their jobs just got harder. They may have succeeded before, but not anymore.”

Looking Ahead

The fusion cell is expected to disrupt kidnapping operations across the country, with Ribadu assuring the public of the Federal Government’s continued support.

“We have already seen the difference your work is making,” he said, pledging adequate resources to sustain the initiative’s success.
