Ondo Warns Traditional Rulers: Jail Time Looms for Land Grabbing Offenders
The Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers implicated in land-grabbing activities, stating that they face imprisonment.
Speaking in Akure about the Anti-Land Grabbing Bill currently under consideration by the state House of Assembly, Ajulo disclosed that some traditional leaders have been complicit in facilitating land disputes and violent confrontations.
“Some of our traditional rulers have caused significant issues regarding land grabbing. They may remain in their palaces but orchestrate chaos through their agents. Many times, these disputes escalate into violent acts, including attacks with dangerous weapons,” he said.
Ajulo made it clear that the government would not hesitate to act decisively. “When traditional rulers are arrested and jailed for this, no one should complain. The law is designed to curb unlawful property entry and related violence,” he added.
To address this pressing issue, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa recently signed Executive Order 2024. This move underscores the state’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for investors, many of whom have expressed concerns over land-related challenges.
The Attorney-General also revealed plans to take over lands in communities plagued by ongoing disputes to restore peace.
He commended the bill’s sponsor, Moyinolorun Ogunwumiju, and praised the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Chief Olamide Oladiji, for their collaborative efforts with the executive arm to ensure the state’s progress.
“Land grabbing is a menace worse than pocket-picking. The legislative revolution initiated by the House will be robustly supported by my office,” Ajulo assured.
The Ondo State government’s firm stance aims to deter land-grabbing practices and protect legitimate land ownership across the state.
