Oshiomhole -“My Son is Fully Qualified for Edo Health Commissioner”
Former Edo State governor and current senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has confidently stated that his son, Cyril, is fully qualified to serve as the state’s commissioner for health.
Oshiomhole made this declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Wednesday. Cyril, a medical doctor, was nominated by Governor Monday Okpebholo, a close ally of Oshiomhole, and sworn in on November 19 at the Government House in Benin City.
When asked about his support for his son’s appointment as commissioner, former labor leader Adams Oshiomhole shared that he had expressed concerns to the governor at the time the decision was made.
Oshiomhole explained: “He doesn’t work under me; perhaps Governor Monday is grooming him. When I was in Edo, I stopped him when he wanted to run for the House of Representatives. I said no and supported another candidate. The second time he tried, I said no again. This time, the governor chose him, and I believe he is qualified.”
“I did voice my concerns when I heard about it. I called him and shared my thoughts. I also expressed my concerns to the governor, knowing people might criticize the decision,” he added.
Oshiomhole went on to explain why he had previously discouraged his son from pursuing politics during his time in office, noting, “Those were the reasons I prevented him from contesting elections when I was in office, but now, I have to accept that, as an adult, you can only do so much to guide your child.”
He emphasized his investment in his children’s education, saying, “I didn’t want them to experience what I went through. Dr. Cyril is not just a medical doctor from ABU (Ahmadu Bello University); he completed post-graduate studies at two universities in the US, including Harvard and another in Louisiana, specializing in public health.”
Oshiomhole concluded, “He’s not where he is because of me; I would say he’s there despite being my son.”
