Peter Obi Steps In to Secure Dele Farotimi’s N30m Bail, Advocates Justice and Rule of Law
Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party and leader of the Obidient Movement, has offered to fulfill the bail conditions for human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi was granted bail on December 20, 2024, by an Ekiti magistrate court following defamation charges filed by veteran lawyer Aare Afe Babalola. The bail terms include a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must be a property owner), surrendering his passport, and refraining from granting media interviews.
Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, revealed Obi’s intervention in a statement on Friday, emphasizing that Obi’s offer aligns with his commitment to the rule of law and justice.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of due process and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa stated.
Obi expressed his hope that the matter would be resolved in a way that upholds legal principles and benefits all parties involved. He also extended his gratitude to the Nigerian judiciary and others who contributed to addressing the case.
This gesture underscores Obi’s dedication to justice and solidarity with advocates of human rights and accountability.
